"I admit that I had an attitude about language."

When I was young, I sometimes criticized some Deaf people that SEE, PSE, etc is not a language for Deaf people but only ASL is.

Hi Joe,

Welcome back! Long time and No See!

From my understanding is that you learned to channel your energy from negative to positive when you give a feedback to Deaf people's sign language skills. You learned not to judge people base on their sign language skills. You learned the history why some Deaf people are not fluent in ASL.

DId you realize hearing people do judge on other hearing's speaking skills? One of my hearing friends said he could tell this woman is not smart based on her speaking skills. I decided to get know this woman, and my friend was right. She was not that smart.

It is ok for you to give a feedback to Deaf people about their sign language skills as long as it is constructive. ASL should be expected to be proficiency same as English wriiten should be expected to be proficiency. How can they improve their sign language skills if they do not get a feedback? They need to learn to accept the feedback. Feedback is the best way for us to learn and to raise the bar with our sign skills, writing skills, and many more.

Some Deaf people think it is good enough to know basic sign Language and sign sloppy where most of us work so hard to try to understand what they are trying to say. It is same thing with some people's attitudes about grammar errors in English writing. It is important our signs are clear and proper. I still bring myself to a higher level of ASL as possible. I keep on learning until I die. It s same thing with English writing.

No one will stop learning.. People born, learn, and die. :o)

Your message brought back memories, much similar to your experience. When I became ASL teacher in early 1990’s. I have had attitude, too. I took linguistic courses at Gallaudet that changes the whole perspective of my attitude & outlook on ASL and other languages and ofc, wisdom creeps upon me as I continue teach.

Really important that one notices of his/her attitude and behavior and do something productive about it. We become better person every day.

Your vlog is significant and promotes awareness. *Hand-waving*

Actually, I'm not alone when I was young and got into Deaf School at Milton before I was previous Oral mainstream school. Mostly some of student who making fun of my PSE/Oral. I had adapt them and patience through few months until learned it lot pretty improved my ASL.

Isn't same as today which big changed awful lot due exposed avt/oral returned from nightmare past simaliar pattern as 1800's. Hopefully one day, whoever person user as PSE/ORAL/CI/SEE/and others will adapt and learn better ASL communication education structure better ways.

Like everyone aren't going giving up and keep strong for ASL stay alive!

*Chuckle* You reminds me of my deaf children. They are going through the same situation you did in past. I, myself, came from hearing family and grew up in mainstream program until age 15, transferred to Deaf school. Having two deaf children, they see differently from what I have grew up and surely they got an attitudes just like you had. Again, we all are learning as we go by in our life. It doesnt matter if it is 1970's or 2000's, everyone seems to have that attitudes and learn to adjust to be a better understanding person.

Hi Joe,

I watched this vlog. I admitted I laughed. Why? Because you are right. As a counsellor at E. C Drury school, I saw you as a radical Deaf student leader who had NO patience with any non ASL stuff. I admired your argument and desire for more infomration about ASL and Deaf. Yes I have seen a lot of change in your attitude toward non ASL stuff. A BIG ONE!

Great vlogging!
